Geranium bicknellii
Bicknell's Geranium
Single Mericarp
Hudson Bay Trout Pond,
2 km East of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan
03-Aug-05This species produces a compound fruit (schizocarp) which splits when ripe into five one-seeded segments (mericarps). Only one of the mericarps is still attached in this specimen. Note the persistent calyx.
Note that the key to the families in Budd's Flora requires "some or all leaves alternate". In fact, the leaves are opposite in this species.
Note also that the key to the species in Budd's Flora requires "stalks of individual flowers more than twice as long as calyx". However, this is more consistently true for the fruiting pedicels, as stated in the Flora of Alberta key.
