All the culms but one have been cut near the base and removed. Note the presence of a rhizome. Note also the leaves are reduced to two bladeless sheaths per culm and there is one terminal spikelet per culm.

Eleocharis palustris is a member of the Eleocharis palustris complex. This complex contains a number of difficult to distinguish species. Flora of North America (FNA) recognizes seven:
