Some bristles have fallen from this achene and are not present in this photo. Note the bristles are not much longer than the tubercle. Finally, note the apex of the achene has a distinct neck. This is true in most, but not all, specimens of E. palustris.

Eleocharis palustris is a member of the Eleocharis palustris complex. This complex contains a number of difficult to distinguish species. Flora of North America (FNA) recognizes seven:
