Note this species ranges from decumbent to erect.  The plant pictured here was decumbent, allowing one to ascribe a "top" and "bottom" to the stem.

Budd's Flora and Flora of Alberta refer to this species as Petalostemon candidum and this is the name used below in reference to the key questions taken from these floras.
