Some stem sections are subterranean. These possess bladders and sometimes a few leaves. Other stem sections are aquatic. These possess many leaves and sometimes a few bladders. Each leaf commonly divides into three primary branches at the base. Each primary branch then divides dichotomously multiple times or is irregularly forked.
