Abies balsamea
Balsam Fir
Branchlet Close-Up, Some Leaves Removed
Townsend Lake in the Porcupine Hills
13-June-2019
The leaves are arranged spirally on sterile branches. However, the leaves are twisted at the base to place all of them in a single plane in a pectinate arrangement. After the leaves fall off or are removed, they leave a circular-ovate scar. Note the leaves do not arise from a peg-like base which remains attached to the branch after the leaves fall (as is the case in Picea).
