The leaves are elliptic to obovate with a rounded apex, whereas at least some leaves of P. aviculare tend to be more lanceolate. Whitish powdery mildew affects both P. achoreum and P. aviculare, but is usually more prominent on P. achoreum.
Note the pedicels are 1.3-1.8 (2) mm long and enclosed in ocreae, whereas the pedicels of P. aviculare are 1.5-5 mm long and may be enclosed in or exserted from ocreae. The flowers are closed, whereas the flowers of P. aviculare are closed or semi-open.
