Note that the three inner sepals have become enlarged, and invest the achene. These enlarged sepals are referred to as valves. Each of the valves has a small tubercle at the proximal end of the central vein.
Note that the key to the families in Budd's Flora requires "stamens and pistils in each flower; NOT [stamens or pistils in separate flowers on the same plant]". This is not correct for this species which is dioecious.
