The inflorescence is composed of pairs of opposite cymes (verticillasters).   The lower cymes are often pedunculate, as in this photo.  The upper cymes are essentially sessile.  Note that some authors use verticillaster to denote an entire inflorescence consisting of a spike of opposite cymes.

Note the key to the species in Budd's Flora requires stems erect or nearly so; NOT [plants decumbent to ascending].  In fact, the stems of this species can be erect, ascending, or decumbent. The rest of the answers to the key questions appear below.
