Smilax lasioneura

Male Plant
Leaf Top

Hudson Bay Regional Park

Note the reticulate venation.  This is very unusual for a monocotyledon since monocotyledons usually have parallel venation.

Family Smilacaceae can be distinguished from other showy monocots by the presence of reticulate venation between the palmate main veins and by the imperfect flowers (plant dioecious).
