Heracleum maximum
Cow Parsnip
Early Fruit, Edge Side
Moose Mountain Provincial Park
06-July-2009
Note the fruit is flattened dorsally, i.e. at right angles to the plane containing the two styles. The fruit is a schizocarp which means it will break up into sub-fruits called mericarps. This fruit will break up into two one-seed mericarps. The two mericarps are joined together in the schizocarp by their inner faces. This surface is called the commissure. The commissure extends "into the picture" in this photograph.
