Note the styles have already exserted, while the stamens remain coiled. After the styles have matured, the stamens will emerge and release their pollen. This precocious development of the gynoecium is called protogyny and serves to inhibit self-fertilization.
Note that the Flora of the Great Plains states that the calyx tube is completely adnate to the ovary for our Umbelliferae. However, the calyx tube appears to be separating from the ovary in this specimen.
There is a major problem with the key to the genera in Budd's Flora with regards to this species. Noting that the leaves are much divided, there are two opposite leaves near the base of each caulescent stem, and the flowers are white, there is no path in the key which leads to Lomatium. Erroneous items have been removed from the list below.
