Chenopodium rubrum
Red Goosefoot
Utricles Close-Up
North of Old Wives Lake
13-Sep-2018
The fruit is a utricle enclosed by the reddish sepals until it finally emerges. The reticulate-punctate pericarp of the utricle is very thin and is easily removed from the seed. As a result, the utricle and seed are similar in size and appearance, except that the surface of the seed is smooth.
A key to all the Chenopodium species occurring in Saskatchewan is found here. This key was derived from the key in the Flora of North America by removing all the non-Saskatchewan species. Another key to the Chenopodium species written by Diana Bizecki Robson is found here.
